The Egyptian Football Association and Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria have parted ways following a last 16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations last Sunday.
His dismissal was announced, and former coach Mohamed Youssef was appointed on an interim basis. The seven-time African champions lost 8-7 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo after a 1-1 draw in San Pedro, as they failed to record a single win at the Africa Cup of Nations 2023.
The EFA in the statement released said:
“The Board of Directors of the Egyptian Football Association, following its meeting today to discuss the technical and administrative reports regarding the national team’s participation in the 2023 African Nations Championship in Ivory Coast, decided to thank the Portuguese Rui Vitoria, the coach of the Egyptian national team, and his assistant staff, while studying the biographies of foreign coaches and presenting them at the next meeting.
“The Council decided to approve the appointment of Mohamed Youssef as general coach of the first Egyptian national team until a foreign technical director is selected and the rest of the staff is formed.”
The FIFA June window would see Egypt take on Burkina Faso in Game 3 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, and its left to see if Mohammed Youssef will handle to the team for that.
