Nigeria’s striker, Victor Osimhen, faces a significant uncertainty regarding his availability for the upcoming semi-final showdown against South Africa at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
Osimhen currently finds himself in the bustling Ivorian commercial hub of Abidjan, while the remainder of the Super Eagles squad has already touched down in Bouake, commencing their preparations for the crucial Wednesday match.
Reports indicate that the Napoli striker is grappling with abdominal discomfort and is currently under observation by medical staff.
Despite his consistent presence in every Super Eagles match in Ivory Coast thus far, Osimhen’s participation remains in doubt. However, there remains a glimmer of hope, as he could still make a last-minute inclusion in Jose Peseiro’s lineup if he manages to recover in time.
In a statement released from the Super Eagles camp, it was revealed: “Members of the team traveled from Abidjan to Bouaké today via a 10 pm Air Cote D’Ivoire flight. Osimhen did not, however, make the trip due to abdominal discomfort.”
“The team’s medical personnel have confirmed that he is under close observation, with a member of the medical team remaining in Abidjan to monitor his condition. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will rejoin the squad before 5 pm.”
Osimhen has notably contributed to the Super Eagles’ campaign, scoring a goal in their 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea on January 14, amidst his five appearances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
