Sports Minister Senator John Enoh says he’s proud of the achievement of the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations despite losing 2-1 to the hosts Cote D’Ivoire in the final on Sunday at the Alassane Ouatarra stadium, Ebimbe, Abidjan.
Despite scoring first, the Super Eagles conceded two in the second half against a very determined Ivorian side who had the presence of an heterogeneous and vociferous crowd.
While reacting to the defeat, Senator John Enoh made it known that the Super Eagles need to be celebrated for their run at the African showpiece because nobody gave them a chance atall, but still made it to the grand finale.
“We will have to go back and evaluate, reassess where we missed it, however, these boys need to be celebrated, I’m not sure anyone gave them a chance when the tournament started, today it wasn’t our day but getting here means we have done a lot of things right”.
“These Boys held the Nation together, United us all through the tournament but just as I said, we will look at where improvement can come and then do what we need to do, obviously it wasn’t a disappointing outing”.
“This is football, it’s a game, somebody has to win, the God of soccer didn’t smile on us today, but this team must be celebrated, this team held the country together throughout the duration of this tournament”
Up next for the Super Eagles is the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series where they will also lock horns with Bafana Bafana in the process.
The team started the series very slowly with two disappointing draws before the Africa Cup of Nations started.
It’s not clear whether coach Jose Peseiro will remain in charge of the team for the series with reports suggesting that he is on his way out.
Peseiro was recently linked with a coaching job at Egyptian Premier League side Zamalek who are still without a Substantive coach
