After winning the CAF Award as the best African Footballer for year 2023, the expectation on Victor Osimhen was high being the man expected to lead the line for the Super Eagles, but in three games Osimhen has only managed to get one goal and has missed a couple of decent chances.
Nigerians are evidently furious because much more is expected from the Napoli talisman, however, we need to be realistic. Osimhen isn’t the only player not coming to the party yet.
It’s a crucial stage at this point, it’s a point where you go back home if you lose, a stage where you advance when you win, hence the need to provide a lot of services for Victor Osimhen.
I can understand people saying he should have converted at least two or three of the chances he has missed so far, that’s because he has scored from even impossible angles, but reasonably, this isn’t Napoli where there are numerous providers.
Why is Salah not getting the goals for Egypt who struggled to qualify, Sadio Mane hasn’t drawn the blood yet either, same as Riyad Mahrez, all former African Footballer of the year at some point. It’s not a defense for Osimhen, but cut this man some slack, watch the midfielders provide consistently and see Osimhen in his full glory.
Some unforgivable misses here and there in the first round truly, but get the coach to find a way to get the best from the ball passers. Osimhen’s goals will surely come.
More than anyone watching, he also wants to score, so bring on any team in the round of 16 and let the game begin.
